Tourists should plan a visit to Yumthang Valley, Lachung, and Zero Point in north Sikkim if you're visiting Sikkim and think you're not going to do it again in a long time to come. What's the reason? Because you may not see anywhere else such astonishing views of snow mountains and rivers. In his' Journal' of 1856, Dr. Hooker reported that Lachung and Yumthang are the two most scenic places in Sikkim and even compared them with Switzerland's. Visit to Yumthang Vally is a must inclusion in your Sikkim Tour Package.
Planning your visit to Lachung and on to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. Tourists need a stay day in Lachung for you to return to Gangtok city.
About 12kms ahead of Chungthang and towards Lachung (40 minutes Road Drive) you will come across a wonderful waterfall along the way known as Bhim Nala (also known as Amitabh Bachchan Waterfalls because a scene of the film 'Ankhen' was filmed here). Take a stop here for 15 minutes and enjoy the beautiful view of the fall roaring down from high above and splashing into the ground near you. The sound of the overflowing water can be heard from far and the water is indeed cold.
There is a small platform built by the local people (with logs and bamboo) so you can walk closer to the waterfall, but you have to pay a fee of Rs. 10 per person to walk there (you can also see the waterfall from the road).
Lachung: Lachung means the' Little Pass' (which means there must also be a' Large Pass?' Indeed, it's another place called Lachen. A road bifurcates from Chunthang and leads to Lachen). Lachung is a small mountain village of about 118kms from Gangtok, at an altitude of 8,610ft. Although the distance looks easy, reaching Lachung from Gangtok city takes about 7 hours by car, and the road is often in bad condition, although it is very scenic. Lachung is part of North Sikkim.
Yumthang: You will stay at Lachung overnight and start early the next morning. Yumthang Valley is situated at an altitude of 11,800 ft, about 25kms from Lachung and takes about 1,5 hours driving. There can be a long queue of vehicles at the check post just after Lachung during high season and the situation there can be very chaotic and you can easily waste about an hour here. So, you have to start very early if you want to avoid such a long queue (even starting at 6 am may not be enough).
The name Yumthang Valley means' Flowers Valley.' Now you know what to look forward to. But if it said' Rhododendron Valley,' the name would have been more appropriate. Because this is the start of the tree line.
Zero Point: The Zero Point (also known as Yumesamdong) is located extra up and about 23kms from Yumthang at an altitude of more than 15,000 ft. It takes an extra 1.6 hours by SUV from Yumthang (about 3 to 3.5 hours from Lachung). This is where the civil road comes to an end and you can't drive any further, hence the Zero Point name. A short distance from here is the border with China, and shortly after Zero Point, tourists are not allowed to go any further. Zero
So, what are you waiting for at Zero Point? The road is zig zag, beautiful but pretty slippery, but the rewards are fantastic. Zero Point or Yume Samdong is where three rivers meet the surrounding snow-clad mountains and offer gorgeous views of the scenery. Zero Point must be a part of sikkim tour itineriry.
Zero Point is covered with snow for most of the year. So, if you wish to see and enjoy the snow, then go to Zero Point and you're not going to be disillusioned. There are also hot springs on the river called Sebu chhu in Yume Samdong. Also situated here is the Donkia-La pass (at an altitude of 18,400 ft linking Lachung Valley with Lachen Valley). You can't access the key, though.
You'll find some provisional stalls at Zero Point where locals sell, eggs, Magi noodles chana masala, etc. You can get coffee/tea (and even beer). But there are no public washroom facilities here.
Permit Requirement: As China's international border is close, the entire area is under army control. Tourists are required to procure permit to visit the Lachung / Yumthang / Zero Point Protected Area Permit (PAP). It can be done either at the Gangtok Tourism Office, Mangan District Administrative Center, or the Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate Office. You have to do it through a licensed Sikkim tour operator... A request form should be sent at least one day in advance.
